Simplifying a Complex HR & Payroll Platform
Redesigning a dense enterprise application into a clearer, lighter experience for HR teams, employees, administrators, and resellers.
The Challenge
Cloud9 HR brings payroll, onboarding, time tracking, benefits, workers compensation, employee management, and other administrative tools into a single platform. The breadth of functionality created a dense interface with deeply nested navigation and inconsistent patterns across the application.
My Role
I joined the team as lead UI/UX designer during an active redesign and helped establish a direction that better aligned with the client’s goals. I refined the emerging design system and redesigned workflows, navigation, dashboards, forms, tables, and supporting content throughout the application.
Making Complex Work Feel Lighter
The goal was not to remove functionality from a feature rich HR platform, but to make that functionality easier to understand. More breathing room, stronger hierarchy, consistent spacing, and restrained visual treatments helped reduce the perceived complexity while keeping important information readily available.
Simplifying Navigation and Workflows
The application relied on several layers of navigation, including tabs nested within other tabs. I refined the hierarchy and established clearer patterns for moving between major product areas, subsections, and contextual workflows without hiding the depth of functionality users still needed.
Creating a Consistent Product System
Reusable components, shared styles, design tokens, and consistent interaction patterns created a cohesive foundation across forms, tables, navigation, and content. The system gave design and development a common language for extending the product without reinventing patterns from screen to screen.
Outcome
The redesign established a flexible visual system that extended beyond the screens I directly designed.
Using reusable components, styles, and design tokens defined in Figma, the development team was able to confidently build additional pages and interface elements while maintaining consistency across the product.
